9 reasons for women to build their career in the field of Engineering at Nubank

I’m Carol, and in 2021 I had the opportunity of joining the Nubank team. Currently, I work as Engineering Tech Manager, heading the payment platform team for operations in Mexico.

The greatest wish for any woman operating in the field of technology is to have the opportunity of working with other women on the team. After all, we represent only 20% of people employed in this area (according to PNAD data). As a member of the Nubank affinity group, NuWomen, I’ll share in this article the outcome of a conversation that we had with the female Software Engineers of the Mexican team on the reasons that make them enjoy working at Nubank.

  1. Inclusion and diversity experienced in practice
  2. Exchange of experiences with women in the field
  3. Being treated as a person, not as an asset
  4. Encouragement for personal development
  5. Working with breakthrough technologies
  6. International opportunities at Nubank
  7. Building a product of great impact
  8. Learning from very capable people
  9. Other people recommend the company

1. Inclusion and diversity experienced in practice

Throughout my entire career in technology, I’ve worked mostly only with men. In fact, all technical interviews that I did were exclusively led by them. At Nubank, my working experience is quite different — starting from the recruitment process, where I had the opportunity of being interviewed by a female software developer from the Mexican team (which is the team that I would join). This gave me a huge confidence, in addition to the joy of knowing that women were being included in the selection of new members for the team.

2. Exchange of experiences with women in the field

Since I got interested in the field of technology, I saw — and suffered — the inequality that women and other minorities experience daily in this environment. Since then, I engage myself to participate in affirmative initiatives for the inclusion of women in the area, in order to have the reception that I missed in my day to day work, and to help other female colleagues in the same situation. Here at Nubank, one of the spaces that we have for such exchanges is NuWomen, a group made up of people who identify as women, and often promotes meetings and initiatives for the entire company.

3. Being treated as a person, not as an asset

After being hired, other factors kept showing me that we really fight for more inclusion and diversity around here. When I completed three months in the company, a key episode changed my personal and professional life: I discovered I was pregnant! It was not planned for that moment, and I got quite concerned with the possibility that this could be a big hindrance at work, but the opposite of what I feared happened. As soon as I reached out to my manager, I got all the support and certainty that being a mother would not influence my performance evaluation — and that the team would have my back for anything I would face from here on.

4. Encouragement for personal development

We are encouraged and supported to grow professionally, with respect for our beliefs and individualities. Feedback is encouraged and emboldened daily — both directly to the person receiving it and through our internal recognition tools. Coupled to this, we have well-structured performance evaluation cycles, having as basis the equity between our diverse personnel, and the elimination of biases in the assessments of every Nubanker. The main objectives of this evaluation are to recognize a job well done and the development points required to reach the next level or a new career opportunity.

5. Working with breakthrough technologies

Here at Nubank we work in an ever-growing environment, both in number of customers and quantity of products. Developing scalable and platforming solutions are challenges that we find in our Engineering teams, and we use technology + design + data to create simple and transparent solutions. Around here you’ll find what is most innovative in the market, such as Clojure and Flutter, and the company offers programs and training so that people can develop internally with such technologies.

6. International opportunities at Nubank

In Brazil, Nubank is the strongest brand in the country, and was also elected for 2 consecutive years as one of the most desired companies to work for. However, what not everyone knows is that a few years ago Nubank has expanded its operation outside of Brazil — specifically to Mexico and Colombia. Having the chance to work in a company of such scale, but within a market that is still in full development (Mexico) is one of the factors that made me embrace this new challenge.

7. Building a product of great impact

Nubank was founded in 2013 with the mission of reducing bureaucracy to access the financial system and giving people back control over their money. Between then and now, more than 60 million customers in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia already chose to join Nu. We estimate that, together, they saved almost 113 million hours of waiting in banks, and more than US$4.8 billion in tariffs. It makes me really proud to be able to work in a company that has such an impact, and that is even recognized for its outstanding customer service!

8. Learning from very capable people

Here we have the opportunity of working with amazing people! They have deep knowledge, both technical and about our business, in addition to truly putting into practice the Nubank culture and our Engineering Principles. But that doesn’t just happen out of nowhere, there’s a huge effort in our talent attraction team for hiring people both aligned with our values and engaged in our technological challenges.

9. Other people recommend the company

Before seeking a new professional opportunity, I recommend asking for referrals from people who have worked at the company, and also reading online reviews. Nubank has 90% approval of current and former Nubankers and the reviews show that the company respects its employees, while valuing diversity and inclusion in the team. When we work in a company that treats us well, has such an admirable culture and values its employees, we make sure to refer this place to friends and acquaintances.

It is for all the reasons above that I believe that Nubank is a great company for women to build their career in the field of Engineering, a place where we’ll be respected, valued and included on a daily basis.
